Green Oceans, a Rhode Island-based organization, along with a coalition of plaintiffs including the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head–Aquinnah, the Narragansett Indian Tribes, commercial fishermen, and coastal stakeholders, filed a new federal lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia challenging the Sunrise Wind offshore wind project. The lawsuit alleges that federal agencies violated environmental and procedural laws in approving the 924-megawatt (MW) project, which is located approximately 30 miles east of Montauk Point, New York. The plaintiffs assert that the project’s environmental review inadequately addressed impacts on marine ecosystems, commercial fishing operations, and tribal resources. Sunrise Wind, a joint venture between Ørsted and Eversource Energy, was approximately 45% complete at the time of the filing and was one of the projects affected by BOEM’s December 22, 2025 suspension order. The lawsuit represents the ongoing legal challenges facing offshore wind development from multiple stakeholder groups, including commercial fishing interests and tribal nations.
